Making MySelf Busy with an Empty Wallet

October 14, 2008 / 4:43 am

My sister’s birthday is coming up, as is my car payment. Sometimes it’s just chaos finding money for bills especially without a steady job. I know I complain and people think “Why don’t you just go apply for jobs then?”, I really don’t know why. I am such an akward person in interviews, applying at Target made me nervous.. They made me wait in their locker room for about 2 hours and he asked me all sorts of “leadership” questions, I told him basically “I don’t know, I don’t lead stuff but if you want me to then sure. Okay”, I said I was available for any shift… Thinking maybe they can stick me in late night stocking or something since I’m 6 feet 6-7 inches tall and I can lift stuff decently so why not? But it was all about my past work experience and being the team leader for some reason. It’s like I thought the point of me applying for a minimum wage job was so I can follow orders and do my job? Guess not! He drilled me though and it was a waste of both of our time, 20 minutes of worthless interviewing and now I have like Interviewaphobia.

I did start a new site for Flashing MySpace Layouts, The content is all unique/ish & it’s a small hobby. That stuff seems to be the new thing for these teens these days so I gave it a shot?

Other than that there’s really been nothing interesting happening, I don’t want to have to not get my sister a present.. If you need something done let me know via email (admin (at) dirt2.com), I am almost always available for work.

Creating Fonts & New Font Preview

September 12, 2008 / 2:24 pm

Okay before you get completely upset at me; This is not a tutorial but a very basic walk through. I don’t really know how to fully make fonts and I am still learning since I myself have not read a tutorial either.

1. I use FontCreator to convert my fonts so they can be font files. Note I do not use this program to make my fonts, I actually have no idea how to use it to completely make my fonts. I do use Photoshop and Illustrator though to create the fonts. Sometimes I write the fonts, but usually I don’t like them enough to finish the alphabet.

2. I consider myself a recycler as I do use other peoples resources sometimes specifically some of the font bases such as Coca Cola ii/Loki Cola for Hawaii Killer and Bauer Bodoni for PlagueDeath. I am figuring out slowly how to make my own type faces and have some already published such as Ghosttown, Alpaca, Ghosttown BC, Robot!Head and shortly Blast Beat but I seriously haven’t the slightest clue how these people make serif or san serif fonts and it blows my mind how amazing and elegant they are, It’s literally witch craft to me. I create alot of grunge fonts in PhotoShop, I am trying Illustrator more and more now but it’s a slower process. I always have to make sure that my documents are thousands upon thousands of pixels too otherwise the font quality drops tremendously.

3. Thinking up names and how my fonts look is really not random at all. For the most part I try to pick names that will display my fonts nicely. For example Dead Secretary, Chose this name because of a) the fact that it’s a grunge stamp/type font and b) because the capital S and A really have that extra ornamental stuff happening and it really makes the font look almost like a logo since it wraps itself nicely together. I think that’s one of the reasons why people have been fond of Dead Secretary, I think it’s great that people like it; it was kind of something new for me (it is a recycled font as well from Gloucester MT Extra Condensed). I’ve wanted to make a fat grunge Arial type font as well, Maybe that comes later.

Anyways, Buy FontCreator if you want to make fonts. I don’t know about Typographer just yet, I’ve never used it and I barely know my way around FC as it is.

People Ask “Where Do You Find Inspiration?”

/ 7:24 am

Where would I find inspiration? Inspiration is around us at every single moment of our life, whether it’s in nature or the art of others and direct or subconscious. Obviously the lifestyle you choose will also allow you find new inspirations, My lifestyle is non-existant however so most of my inspiration comes from days of me sitting here not being able to do anything. One day I could be having strange thoughts about my life, How it goes absolutely no where (day after day) and having no routine and then the next day I will have this huge burst of energy just fill my entire head and I can start something, finish it and be glad I did it. Sadly it’s not often enough to make me financially stable in doing graphic design online, There are more down days than bursting ones and it causes me to lose focus/procrastinate.

In all honesty, I don’t think anyone needs inspiration if you have an imagination. You can sit in a room with black walls and just stare, Those with no trace of thought or imagination will notice the rooms shadows and possibly a few cracks in the walls. Those with a mind full of exciting adventures and designs will see complete scenes come to life right before them; whether they’re horrific or peaceful it’s up to the thought maker.

One large source of inspiration comes from those who start small and explode into success, that’s something that I don’t find happening in my life so it simply inspires me to think that people can do that with themselves. I am truely jealous of them and I study their actions, Whether what they do impresses me or not it’s not what they’ve done but how far they’ve come along.

I don’t find the things I do to be great enough to even consider them to involve any sort of inspiration as if what I make is a masterpiece, A freelance designer in a 3rd world country can easily replicate what I do (and I don’t consider it talent). Maybe when they ask the question they don’t look at the things I’ve done but think about the person I am, maybe I inspire them and that’s why they ask? Sure, that would be nice but I can’t sit here and assume that.

Thinking about it actually, my pure inspiration comes directly from the people who use my resources and like my work. Any compliments and thoughts people write to me go straight into a mental note box and I just get thrilled that they like what I do, It makes what I do worthwhile. When I go weeks without hearing a simple “this is great” or “thank you” I begin to lose focus, and I start to work in dull motions where things don’t quite fit together and I become entirely useless. So I guess my final thought is: Inspiration? Who fucking needs it, Do what you do and don’t wait for someone to inspire you before you get started.

Photoshop Brushes & Fonts Up

September 9, 2008 / 5:45 am

You can click either item on the top navigation or click here for the Photoshop Brushes & Fonts.

I have 10 fonts and over 40 brushes so far, Hopefully more to come.

Dead Secretary is the #2 most downloaded font on Dafont.com right now and has recieved a Daily Deviation from DeviantArt.com!

It’s kind of funny how I run my websites, Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t I guess. It’s just hard to manage a site knowing you could spend that time doing something entertaining or something that’s worth while that can make you money. I am having a real hard time making money online right now and it’s my main source of income so you can imagine the pressure and stress I have to deal with just typing this message alone. I mean honestly here it is at 3am and I have brought myself to finally work and finish up Dirt2.com

I don’t have a contact page set up but you can still email me at admin(at)dirt2.com!
