August 1st – DaFont Top Charts, Font Trends & Reviews Thumbnail

So today is August 1st, if you have taken a gander or have come from DaFont.com you will probably notice Dirt2 has scaled the charts being the #1, #2, and #3 most downloaded font in the last 24 hours! (Additionally: #7, #52, #66, #67, and #84) I just wanted to personally thank everyone who’s downloaded the fonts and let them know it means alot that they have shown an interest in my work and typography, I only ask that you be reminded of the terms of use that my fonts are free for personal use so if you have any business matters or commercial projects that you want to use the font for please visit my shop and purchase commercial rights. This money literally pays a small portion of my bills and allows me to keep my website running.

Every donation and purchase matters so much and I owe a great thanks to everyone who’s made purchases and donations thus far. Of course I can’t forget the owner of Dafont who is a very nice person and considerably generous who’s made a website where font owners can really advertise themselves by not only providing a direct link to their website above the font but advertising space when people view their fonts, It’s one of the reasons why I love submitting some of my stuff to Dafont and will keep doing so.

Dafont Top 100 August 2009

I am also going to take this time to give a shout-out to some of my favorite new fonts of August from DaFont.com, I hope my input may persuade you into downloading these amazing fonts because really they deserve to be downloaded just as much as an abused dog deserves a good home.

  • 1. Paneuropa : This new sans serif sort of reminds me of verdana mixed with rockwell, it has a very old fashioned look with a new twist (not to mention a variety of weights).
    Paneuropa
  • 2. Origicide : It’s very simple but has that rock and roll/death metal feel to it without it being overly powerful (makes it very flexible).
    Origicide
  • 3. ReBoard : Billy Argel is no new face to the font industry and his talents shouldn’t be either, this font is very trendy but the downside is it’s only caps, no lowercase, no punctuation, nothing else. Still makes it a usable font for large headers, flyers, and advertising.
    Reboard
  • 4. Pincoya Black : A retro font with lots of swoops and fancy styling. The downside I do see is if the words will appear more solid than the preview, I am guessing there’s a chance it won’t and in order to get those thick looking solid words you may have to do some path editing but still awesome nonetheless.
    Pincoya Black
  • 5. Happy Sans : This font is pretty amazing if I do say so myself, The flaring and bounciness really gives it an optimistic vibe which makes it great for kids projects, church functions, youth activities, and blissful website designs.
    Happy Sans
  • 6. Buka Bird : This retro font really reminds me of those retro kids books from decades ago, The letter is pretty accurate and it has that tropical/modern feel to it. I really like the punctuation in this font as well, very rarely do you see punctuation and lettering fit so perfectly with the font.
    Buka Bird
  • 7. Pollux 9x : This has to be one of the best new fonts to Dafont in August, it has 6 variations in 3 different styles and is just overall really flexible. I can see it being used on sports games, horror ads, grunge pictures, a wide variety of median can be produced with this one font.
    Pollux 9x
  • 8. Velocity : This creative font is very sporty, has that futuristic vibe to it with a rounded alphabet/tech styled lettering. Downside is again, lack of lettering and punctuation.
    Velocity
  • 9. Val : I notice these types of fonts aren’t usually noticed with much enthusiasm, there seems to be a huge variety of similar fat fonts but this really caught my eye. The way the letters are aligned and the spacing in the letters that make it eligible english are perfect, great for logos and funky projects.
    Val
  • 10. Aaargh : This font may not have the most pleasant name but the design is very professional, the letters are thin and elegant and great for logo design.

    Sketched Popular Fonts

Scratchy fonts have always been around, but there has been a growing trend in sketchy pre-existing popular fonts. I have a feeling we should all expect to see more and more in the coming years because of a couple reasons: 1) They actually look awesome. 2) They’re easy to make. 3) Illustrator also has an easy sketching process so you can create entire sketched fonts from any font within a couple minutes! FontStruct Fonts

I have a feeling that dozens more are on their way to dafont right now, This is a growing trend for sure as the program hasn’t been around for more than a year (I don’t think, then again I don’t know). The fonts it creates well… you can tell when it’s made by FontStruct besides the giant logo it produces on unavailable characters it also has that weird shapey look to them.

Now don’t get me wrong, the program is pretty neat (and free) but I mean.. The fonts sort of all look the same and even they say you can’t really make anything you want, You can make what you want with shapes and circles and fancy borders but that’s about it. Hopefully in time they may develop more advanced ways of font making so that those who love details (who me?) can have something to drool over instead of a font made out of squares.
